The misbehavour of a section of BSF jawans with Indian residents on this side of the border often create serious resentment among people, leading to protests and public show of anger. Such things have happened earlier also but this time there was great commotion among people , leading to blockade of road . Finally situation calmed down after two senior officers had tendered apology on behalf the force and unruly jawan involved in the incident.

Sources from Boxanagar said that on September 7 the chief of south Kalamchaura panchayat Bapon Sarkar was abused and physically manhandled by the Kalamchaura border outpost commander Anil Rai of BSF (149th battalion). However the panchayat chief escaped serious injury from the attempted assault as local people had come forward to save him. The incident happened in the Kalamchaura market in the evening.

Enraged by the mistreatment meted out to the panchayat chief a large number of people this morning laid a siege around the Kalamchaura border outpost shouting slogans and launched a road blockade . As a result hundreds of vehicles on both sides of the road got stranded. However the situation worsened as a group of BSF jawans tried to drag some protesters including women into the BOP but this was foiled by the people. Finally the deputy commander of BSF (149 battalion) Vishnu Kumar and company commander Gaurav Swamy appeared on the spot and tendered a verbal apology to the agitated people. They also held a meeting with the panchayat chief Bapon Sarkar and assured him that from now on the jawans of the BSF will be careful about their treatment of common people and will respect their sensitivities.

The situation then calmed down but sources from Kalamchaura said that ever since the border area had been taken over by BSF’s 149th battalion there have been frequent disputes and clashes between the BSF jawans and local people. They added that preparation is on to address a letter to the BSF IG urging him to replace the 149th battalion with forces belonging to another battalion or to sensitise the jawans and officers of the jawans posted now in Kalamchaura.
