The Tripura police team investigating the sensational bank fraud of Rs 16 crores of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has already achieved a remarkable success by tracing online and recovering Rs 7 crores that had been defrauded by scamsters through cheques. This success has been achieved by the team led by officer in charge of West Agartala police station Rana Chatterjee who earlier honed his investigating skill during his stint in CBI.

Speaking to this portal Rana Chatterjee said that Rs 7 crores has already been traced and recovered and the rest will also be recovered and the culprits arrested. “How much of the total stolen money have already been encashed by the scamsters is still not clear but our investigation is progressing rapidly and we are confident of fully cracking the case; the AMC will get back its money which is insured by the UCO bank but we are after the frauds” said Rana Chatterjee in an exclusive conversation. He pleaded his inability to disclose more in the interest of the ongoing investigation but stated that those who had committed the fraud are ‘very sophisticated and technically skilled people’.

Asked how the cheques of the AMC , supposed to be under custody of responsible officers in secret chambers, could be cloned without having access to originals and why the AMC officials or authority had not received any mobile alert from the bank authority as is the norm, Rana Chatterjee significantly smiled. “These are pertinent questions but at this stage I can not make any comment as our investigation is now in a crucial stage and we are seized of all angles; we are looking into all angles and the actual culprits will definitely be caught” said Rana Chatterjee. He stated that during their investigation in the UCO bank wherefrom the fraud had occurred they had taken help from a technical expert from another branch of the bank and this has proved to be useful. He asserted that this is the first time an important case of the biggest bank fraud in Tripura has been cracked open so early and the entire case will be resolved soon.
