The historic Mata Tripura sundari Temple, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, is set to get a new look with major infrastructure and beautification works nearing completion under the central government’s PRASAD scheme. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the newly developed facilities on September 22.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Sunday visited the Matabari temple complex to review the progress of the ongoing work and sought the blessings of the deity. He was accompanied by Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, local MLA Abhishek Debroy, Bagma MLA Rampada Jamatia, Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha, DGP Anurag Dhankhar, Tourism Secretary U.K. Chakma, Revenue Secretary Brijesh Pandey, PWD Secretary Kiran Gitte, and several senior officials.
During the inspection, Dr. Saha emphasized the importance of timely completion of the project ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit. Tourism Secretary U.K. Chakma was present during the review session; however, Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury was not seen at the site.
The temple’s redevelopment project, costing nearly Rs. 100 crore, is expected to boost spiritual tourism and improve pilgrim facilities. Yet, certain issues remain unresolved. Devotees have expressed concerns over the inconvenience caused by the scorching heat while climbing the long stairways without carpets or shade. One devotee shared in CM facebook page that, 'Last Friday, when I visited Matabari with my elderly parents, our feet got badly scorched. There were no carpets or shade arrangements. Moreover, after giving dakshina, the priests were still demanding extra tips. This is very disappointing, he alleged.
Another devotee urged the authorities to provide free prasad for pilgrims. According to him, if it is limited or for certain hours each day, prasad should be made available free of cost. Currently, the cost is Rs. 70 per thali. Since this project is under the PRASAD scheme, it was requested that every devotee should have access to free prasad, the devotee said.
The upcoming inauguration by the Prime Minister is expected to mark a historic moment for the temple, but devotees hope the authorities will also address these ground-level concerns to make the pilgrimage experience more fulfilling.
