Tripura University Missing from Top 100 Central University Rankings in India

Tripura University has failed to secure a place in the top 100 institutions of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, both in the overall and university categories. The absence of Tripura’s lone central university from the list has sparked disappointment among the academic community and raised serious questions about its functioning.

While premier institutions like IIT Madras, IISc Bengaluru, JNU, Delhi University, and Banaras Hindu University continue to dominate the top positions, Tripura University’s name is missing even from the first 100 ranks, slipping into the lower bands of 101–150 and 151–200.

Stakeholders and insiders attribute this decline to alleged irregularities and mismanagement under the tenure of former Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ganga Prasad Prasain and incumbent Registrar Dr. Deepak Sharma. Critics claim that academic standards, research output, and administrative transparency have suffered significantly during their leadership.

The Tripura University has been looted in all respects, academic integrity, infrastructure development, and financial discipline. This downfall is the result of long-standing corruption and mismanagement, remarked a senior faculty member on condition of anonymity.

The dismal performance not only tarnishes the reputation of Tripura University but also impacts thousands of students in the state who rely on the institution for higher education and research opportunities.

With the release of the NIRF 2025 rankings, the glaring omission of Tripura University from the top 100 is being seen as a wake-up call for immediate reforms in governance, accountability, and academic excellence.
