After the Chief Whip of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Kalyani Roy, now state Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy has raised serious allegations of substandard work in National Highway projects across Tripura. Speaking to the media, the minister said the dilapidated condition of National Highways has brought the role of construction agencies under serious question.

Pointing to the miserable condition of the Agartala-Udaipur National Highway, especially in areas like Udaipur, Dhwajanagar, Police Line, and Tepaia Eco Park, the finance minister said the situation has become unbearable for daily commuters. The minister informed that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a four-lane highway stretching from Khowai to Mohanpur, Kamalasagar up to Mata Bari has already been prepared. However, he clarified that the state’s Public Works Department has no role in highway repair works as the responsibility solely lies with central construction agencies.

Locals and commuters have alleged that several stretches of the highway have lost their blacktop and turned into small and large potholes. Temporary patchwork repairs have further invited criticism against the construction agencies. In front of the Brahmabari CNG station, the road remains broken for a long time, creating severe problems during rains when waterlogging adds to the suffering of both drivers and pedestrians. Similar waterlogging issues continue at Dhwajanagar Police Line, where overflowing drains submerge the road frequently.

Minister Roy said he had personally urged the construction agencies to undertake proper repairs, but in reality, the condition of the roads remains largely unchanged. The roads are unsafe for vehicular movement and are causing heavy damage to tyres and vehicle machinery, he remarked.

Further complaints have emerged about unscientific road heightening in several areas including Ramesh Chowmuhani, Bridge Corner, Brahmabari, and Mata Bari. Soil is often dumped to match the road’s height with adjoining land, but rains wash away the soil, restoring the earlier hazardous condition.

Citizens have demanded immediate completion of the Agartala-Sakram stretch of the highway to ease movement. Meanwhile, the Netaji Subhash Bridge in Udaipur has also developed cracks at multiple points, sparking concerns about safety.

The finance minister’s outburst has once again put the spotlight on the quality of National Highway construction in Tripura, intensifying pressure on central agencies to act urgently.

Earlier, day before yesterday Chief Whip of the Tripura Legislative Assembly Kalyani Ray also raised similar allegations that the National Highways works in Teliamura Hospital road is halted and quality of work is not as per rules.
