In a strongly worded press statement, the 'Amara Bengali' Party emphasized that the media is a friend of the people and a vital pillar of democracy, not an enemy.

The party stated that the press plays a crucial role in highlighting both the government’s constructive initiatives and the sorrows and sufferings of ordinary citizens. The role of journalism in a democratic state is immense. Therefore, the media cannot be considered the enemy of the people, the statement read.

Criticizing the recent remark by minister Kishore Barman of the present government, who allegedly branded the media as an enemy, the Amara Bangali party in a press statement said such an approach is unfortunate.

The Amara Bengali Party underlined that the press not only exposes the government’s faults but also helps correct them, thereby contributing positively to governance. The media, it noted, also highlights issues concerning opposition parties, unemployment, health, agriculture, education, sports, weather, national and international affairs—thus acting as a friend of society as a whole.

It is not acceptable to label the media as an enemy simply because it criticizes an individual, organization, company, political party, or even the government. Instead, the media should be allowed to function independently and impartially, the party statement said.

The statement concluded by urging that all in a democratic society must ensure freedom for the press to carry out its duties responsibly, providing objective, accurate, and constructive criticism in the greater interest of the people.
