Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Tuesday said farmers are central to Tripura’s development, with the state government focusing on agriculture, allied sectors, tourism, solar energy and forestry to drive sustainable growth.
Speaking at an oil palm plantation event at Fatikchhara Tea Garden, Nath said Tripura is heavily dependent on edible oil imports, leading to a large outflow of money. Highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for self-reliance in edible oil, he announced that two companies, Godrej Agrovet and Patanjali, will implement oil palm projects across all districts of the state. These firms will set up nurseries, processing plants, and one-stop solution centres to support farmers, besides buying produce directly from farm gates.
The Minister said Tripura’s per capita income rose from Rs 1.40 lakh to Rs 1.98 lakh under the current government and is projected to reach Rs 3.70 lakh by 2030 and Rs 19.86 lakh by 2047. “Farmers’ incomes will double, benefitting the state’s overall economy,” he added.
