Tripura Panchayati Raj and Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman landed in controversy after a clip of his speech went viral where he described the media as one of the “enemies” of elected representatives.

Speaking at the inauguration of a two-day capacity-building workshop on Panchayati Raj at AD Nagar Training Institute, Barman remarked that public representatives always face scrutiny and, with it, enemies. “They may be from your own party, the opposition, or even the media,” he said. The minister also noted that rivals can emerge from within one’s political circle.

Chief Minister Manik Saha was present at the programme alongside senior officials. During his address, Barman urged representatives to recognise their threefold responsibility—social, political, and public—and use training sessions to improve administrative skills while strengthening ties with the electorate. He stressed that welfare schemes must be distributed fairly, ensuring no family is left behind.

Taking aim at past administrations, Barman alleged that corruption in rural development schemes was rampant earlier, claiming funds were diverted and benefits failed to reach the poor. He insisted the present government had ended such malpractice.

The minister further reminded that electoral victories depend on grassroots performance. “If panchayat representatives remain close to the people, no one can stop their success. Power is temporary, but honest work earns permanent respect,” he added.

His remark on the media, however, has drawn sharp criticism.
