Amid growing concern over attempts to brand Bengalis in Tripura as “outsiders” and “refugees,” regional political outfit Amra Bangali has stepped up its activism in an assertive manner. The party recently organised a parade of its action squad, the Bangali Bahini, as a symbolic message against the forces allegedly working to undermine the identity of Bengalis in the state. Over the past few months, a narrative has been gaining traction suggesting that Bengalis do not belong to Tripura, a claim the party has strongly rejected as politically motivated.

In continuation of its campaign, Amra Bangali has demanded immediate accountability from authorities over allegations that Bengali-speaking Indian citizens are being wrongfully deported to Bangladesh under the pretext of being illegal immigrants. On Saturday, party supporters, led by state president Gauranga Rudra Pal, took out a rally from the organisation’s headquarters and held a protest meeting at Orient Chowmuhani in Agartala to press their demands.

Addressing the gathering, Pal accused security forces of detaining and deporting Bengali-speaking Indians while confiscating their identity documents. He claimed that the worst affected are migrant workers from Tripura and other Bengali-majority regions who had moved to states such as Gujarat, Haryana, and Rajasthan in search of livelihood. “This is nothing less than an insult to the Bengali language and an injustice to the very people who sacrificed their lives for India’s freedom struggle,” he said.

The party alleged that such actions were being carried out to serve divisive political agendas and warned that if the trend continues, Amra Bangali will intensify its agitation through democratic means. Leaders emphasised that the movement is not just about safeguarding individual rights but about defending the dignity and identity of Bengalis in Tripura.
