The yearlong misrule of the illegitimate interim government in Bangladesh has now started taking its toll on self-appointed advisors of the government. Even though the country’s largest political party the ‘Awami League’ has been banned by the interim government , supporters of the party among expatriates in various countries still remain active and defiant.

This came out in sharp focus in front of the New York consulate office of Bangladesh in the USA with hundreds of Awami League supporters gathering there to protest against the interim government whose advisor on press and public relations Mahfuz Alam had gone there to attend an official function . The Bangladesh consulate in New York had organised a commemorative programme on the July uprising last year in the office and Mahfuz Alam had been invited as the chef guest in it on last Sunday.

With information obtained in advance about the programme hundreds of Awami League supporters among the expatriate Bangladeshis had gathered in front of the office and started shouting slogans against the interim government and its policies. Even though Mahfuz Alam had been escorted into the consulate building through the backdoor the Awami Leaguers resorted to stone pelting that cracked a glass door and slogan shouting demanding the resignation of the illegitimate regime. The demonstration was however controlled by New York police and the crowd dispersed. Realising the growing public anger against the interim regime Mahfuz Alam was restrained in his speech in the programme, stating that he is not against any party and the government is trying to restore normalcy in the entire country .

Later the Bangladesh consulate authority yesterday filed letters of complaint to the US state department branch in New York , police authority and the New York city corporation urging them for help in ensuring peaceful programmes in the future. Apparently the New York authorities assured the consulate of appropriate action in future.
