Ten days after a shocking incident of moral policing in Udaipur’s Khilpara area, police arrested three persons in connection with the brutal assault of a woman that sparked outrage after a video of the attack went viral on social media.
Superintendent of Police (Gomati) Kiran Kumar identified the accused as Manju Rani Das, Putul Rani Das, and Hamida Banu. The video footage showed a mob mercilessly thrashing the woman in public while local residents reportedly attempted to suppress the matter. The incident occurred on August 16.
According to the police complaint filed by the victim’s husband, Swapan Das, the woman was tied up, thrown face down on a drain culvert, and beaten by a group allegedly led by local political figures. In a further act of humiliation, her hair was cut off by force.
The complaint named several people including Mozira Begum, Monju Rani Das, and Bholu Rani Das. However, the victim’s husband alleged that police initially failed to take action.
As the video triggered widespread condemnation, BJP’s Gomati district leadership, led by president Sabita Nag, met the Superintendent of Police demanding strict action. Nag described the assault as a “disgrace to the whole society.”
Police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). A special investigation team headed by the Sub-Divisional Police Officer and including the Officer-in-Charge of the Women’s Police Station has been formed to probe the incident.
This case highlights the disturbing persistence of moral policing in parts of India, raising serious concerns about law enforcement’s role, political links, and the urgent need to safeguard women’s dignity and rights.
