Pradyot effusive over supreme court’s four week notice to state government on reasons for not holding VC elections

The ‘Tipra Motha’ supremo Pradyot Kishore was effusive over the supreme court’s four week notice to the state government asking it to show reasons why election to the 587 village committees is not being held . The division bench of the supreme court comprising chief justice B.R.Gavai and Justice B.Anjaria issued the notice today giving four weeks time for furnishing reply on why the long-overdue election is not being held and when it will be organised.

Pradyot Kishore , as part of his pressure politics on BJP, took to his ‘Facebook’ handle to thank the supreme court and express his faith in the Indian judicial system, claiming credit for having filed the case in the apex court despite pleas to the contrary that his party is a partner in governance in state and he should not have recourse to litigations over the issue. The actual fact however is that the elections to the Village Committees within the ADC , due in the year 2021, could not be held because of then raging Covid pandemic. A high court order passed in 2023 had directed the state government to hold the elections if possible in December that year but that could not be held for a variety of reasons but preparation was on . In the year 2024 when the state election commission was preparing for village committee elections the resettled Reang refugees from Mizoram raised the demand that separate village committees be formed for them in their areas of habitation and their names be included in the electoral roll. When the matter was in the stage of consideration Pradyot himself met the then state election commissioner Sharadindu Chowdhury on November 1 2024 and urged him to enroll the names of resettled Reangs as voters and constitute separate village committees for them before holding elections and spoke to the media about this .Naturally the election was again stalled.

But Pradyot effected another of his usual political somersaults recently by filing a petition in the supreme court seeking orders on elections to the village committees as part of his tactics to bring pressure to bear on the central and state BJP. Flaunting the notice issued by supreme court as his personal achievement Pradyot delivered a longish sermon to his followers through ‘Facebook Live’ , paying lip service to the problems and unmet aspirations of ‘Tiprasa’, Bengalis and Manipuris but , in essence, trying to play on the raw nerves of tribal people. He reminded the ‘Tiprasas’ of their hopes and aspirations and the need for improving their lot. He also claimed to have had talks with the IPFT and its leader Shukla Charan Noatia but regretted that other tribal organizations like the Gana Mukti Parishad (GMP), Jana Jati Morcha of BJP were working at cross purposes without spelling out his contention in so many words. He also harped on his pet theme of ‘Thansa’ or unity as the panacea for all the ills and troubles faced by the tribal people , implying in his cunning way that all tribals should unite under his banyan shelter to be counted and looked upon across the country.
