Incidents of theft are alarmingly on the rise across Tripura, creating a wave of insecurity among citizens. From residential houses to schools, colleges, and even temples, thieves are striking at will, often when the owners are away. Police sources and locals suspect that in most of these cases, drug addicts are behind the crimes, with the stolen money and valuables being used to fuel their addiction.

The modus operandi of these thieves is becoming increasingly brazen. In several cases, they not only take away cash, gold ornaments, and valuables but also help themselves to food inside the homes, leaving families shocked upon their return.

On Saturday night, a house in Agartala’s Banamalipur Ishwar Kendra Club area was targeted while the residents were away. The burglars broke into locked cupboards and decamped with cash and gold worth around 20 lakh. Upon receiving information, police from East Agartala station visited the site.

In another shocking case, thieves looted the Kalyan Mandir at New Ramnagar in the Amtali police station area. The culprits took away temple donations along with brass and copper religious items. Such incidents have raised concerns as thefts from temples are becoming frequent, leaving devotees and priests anxious.

Similar burglary incidents were reported from Bishalgarh, where miscreants looted a house in the Shantipara area. In many cases, thieves struck during the daytime when families were away for work or other engagements.

Local residents complain that despite repeated thefts, police have failed to trace or apprehend the culprits. Meanwhile, opposition parties and civil society groups allege that the increasing number of thefts indicates a breakdown in law and order, urging the administration to take stricter steps.

With incidents being reported almost daily, fear grips citizens across the state. Residents now question whether the police and administration are capable of curbing the menace before it worsens further.
