Silent BJP Leadership Faces Criticism After Udaipur Atrocity, Despite Past Outcry Against Similar Incidents During Left Regime

Udaipur’s Bhangerpara has witnessed a shocking and shameful incident that has sparked outrage across the state. A 26-year-old woman, Purnima Ghosh, was brutally humiliated, her hands and feet tied, her hair cut off, and her dignity torn apart, under the guise of so-called social justice. This barbaric act, carried out in front of a passive crowd, has exposed the deep moral decay within society. Disturbingly, instead of stepping forward to protect the victim, bystanders were busy recording videos and circulating them on social media.
This is not just a crime, it is a dangerous example of mob justice, silence, and indifference. Questions are now being raised about whether khap-style panchayat justice has silently taken root in Tripura. Many are asking: does the rule of law exist anymore in the state? Who gives individuals or groups the authority to act as judge, jury, and executioner?
Legal experts and social activists point out that such actions are clear violations of human rights, yet neither the state’s Human Rights Commission nor law enforcement authorities appear to be taking strong preventive measures. Critics argue that this failure to intervene has emboldened so-called society leaders, who continue to conduct public shaming rituals, beating alleged thieves, forcing marriages, or cutting women’s hair in the name of character judgment.
Social media has been flooded with angry reactions, warning that if these practices are not curbed immediately, Tripura risks descending into lawlessness where ordinary citizens assume the role of judge and punisher.
Adding a political twist, many users recalled a similar incident that took place years ago in Chandrapur, Agartala, during the Left regime, when BJP leaders vocally condemned the atrocity. However, after the latest incident in Udaipur, the silence of the BJP’s current state leadership has triggered widespread criticism, with many questioning the party’s double standards.
In connection with the medieval-style brutality against Purnima Ghosh (26) of Bhangerpara, Udaipur, the police have registered a case against three women on the instruction of the Superintendent of Police of Gomati district.
