Tripura now offers almost every advanced healthcare facility within the state, Health and Family Welfare Department Secretary Kiran Gitte, IAS said at a press conference held at the Agartala Press Club today.
Highlighting the steady improvement in the state’s health sector, Gitte credited Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha’s commitment and personal initiative for the remarkable transformation. He pointed out that under the Chief Minister’s weekly public grievance program Mukhyamantri Samipeshu, people often bring health-related issues to his notice, and the Chief Minister ensures their effective redressal.
Currently, the state’s three leading hospitals, GBP Hospital, IGM Hospital, and the Cancer Hospital, together have around 2,200 beds. On average, 4,000 to 5,000 patients avail outpatient services at these hospitals every day. The state also has 116 ICU beds, and annually around 12 to 15 lakh patients receive treatment across different facilities.
Compared to several other states, Tripura has significantly advanced in diagnostic services. Importantly, the number of patients referred outside the state for treatment has drastically reduced. Earlier, around 2,000 patients were referred every year, whereas in the financial year 2022-23, the number came down to 774. It further dropped to 722 in 2023-24, and in the ongoing financial year 2024-25, it has reduced to 690.
The Health Secretary further stated that for surgeries and treatments not yet available in Tripura, the government is taking steps to bring in specialist doctors from outside the state so that patients can avail such services locally.
Appealing to patients and their families, Kiran Gitte urged everyone to place their trust in Tripura’s doctors and hospitals, as the state’s healthcare system is rapidly evolving to meet modern standards.
Other than Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, senior doctors including Shiddha Reddy, Dr. Jayanta Ray, and Dr. Sankar Chakraborty were also present during the press conference and responded to various questions from journalists. In the question–answer session, the Health Secretary clarified that Speaker Biswabandhu Sen went outside the state for better treatment facilities as per his family members desire. He further mentioned that the preliminary treatment provided in Tripura was excellent, and at present the Speaker’s health condition is somewhat stable and showing signs of improvement.
