Prof. Shyamal Das Appointed Acting Vice Chancellor of Tripura University, Scrutiny Ordered into Former VC Ganga Prasad Prasain’s Tenure

In a significant development at Tripura University, the Ministry of Education, Government of India, has directed that Prof. Shyamal Das, Department of English and the senior-most professor of the University, will take over as Acting Vice Chancellor with immediate effect. The order, issued from Shastri Bhawan, New Delhi, on August 21, 2025, stated that the President of India, in her capacity as the Visitor of Tripura University, approved the proposal for handing over temporary charge to Prof. Das following the completion of the tenure of Prof. Ganga Prasad Prasain.

Prof. Das will discharge duties as Vice Chancellor for a period of one year, or until a regular Vice Chancellor is appointed, whichever is earlier.

Sources within the institution indicated that following the expiry of Prof. Prasain’s term on August 16, 2025, after 5:30 pm, a thorough scrutiny of all administrative and financial activities carried out during his tenure is likely to be initiated. Allegations of irregularities and questionable decisions during his vice chancellorship are expected to come under close examination.

The appointment of Prof. Shyamal Das as Acting Vice Chancellor is seen as an attempt to restore normalcy and transparency in the functioning of Tripura University after a turbulent administrative phase.
