Senior Tipra Motha leader and former Tripura National Volunteers (TNV) leader Bijay Kumar Hrangkhale has stressed that today’s tribal youth in Tripura are no longer uneducated; most of them are now highly educated, aware, and capable of understanding socio-political realities. He, however, emphasized the importance of making them aware of the historical background and the root causes of tribal backwardness rather than allowing them to be misused for the political interests of certain individuals.
Speaking over the phone with the editor of tripurainfo.com, Hrangkhale said, “The many tribals in Tripura, especially from the young generation, are now very smart and they understand everything. But it is our responsibility to guide them with the correct historical context and ensure their struggle is not misled for someone’s vested political gain.”
His remarks came a day after the 117th birth anniversary of Tripura’s visionary last Maharaja, Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur. On this occasion, a group of followers from Dhalai district visited him at his residence in Shyamalibazar, Agartala, to pay their respects. Hrangkhale, who has been suffering from health complications for the past eight to nine months and recently underwent surgery, is presently engaged in writing a book on his life, the tribal communities of Tripura, their problems, and possible solutions.
Turning to current political issues, Hrangkhale expressed dissatisfaction with both the central and state governments, alleging that they are “not positive and committed” to the genuine development of Tripura, particularly in the tribal areas. He criticized the delay in implementing the tripartite agreement with the Tipra Motha, as well as another agreement signed with surrendered militants last year and this year.
He also voiced concern over the non-conduct of TTAADC village council elections for two consecutive terms, along with the delay in filling up two vacant member posts in the TTAADC despite repeated orders from the Tripura High Court.
Issuing a veiled warning, Hrangkhale said that if the senior ally BJP and its leadership continued with such behavior, “the tribal people in TTAADC areas will not tolerate it for long.” He further cautioned power-hungry leaders within his own party, urging them to focus on the welfare and upliftment of backward tribal communities instead of pursuing narrow self-interests.
