Bangladesh : Yunus government’s vindictive politics and abetment of anti-minority activities worsen anarchy

The all-round anarchy in Bangladesh under the illegitimate rule of Md Yunus and his cohorts seems all set to worsen further because of the politics of vendetta and abetment of anti-minority depredations of the fundamentalist and communalist elements. Having already demolished and desecrated a large number of Hindu temples and places of worship all over the country the pathologically communal elements under the Yunus regime have now turned their eyes on the Sitakund and Chandranath hill areas of Chittagong . In that hilly area away from Chittagong there is a temple dedicated to Hindu God Lord Siva on top and another temple dedicated to Mata Chandi below it. These places of worship and devotion were established at least 1500 years ago when the entire Bangladeshi hellscape was dominated by Hindus who used to go on pilgrimage to the temples in the serene obscurity of the hills. But times have changed and so has the demographic composition because of geometrical progression of population growth of the ‘Momins’, propelled by forcible conversion, and corresponding decline in the Hindu population.

These temples had long been targets for forcible occupation or at least encroachment by the ‘Momins’ who aim to set up picnic spots and tourist centres there. Shortly after the Yunus regime had taken over power the ‘Momins’ had started selling non-veg food including beef and ‘Biriyani’ at a short distance from the twin temples riding roughshod over the protests of the hapless Hindus. Sources from across the border confirmed that now preparation has started either to capture the temples wholesale or to convert them into restaurants, picnic spots and parks by force and , despite complaints, the ‘Momin’ police have been keeping quiet over the issue which may erupt any time.

Apart from this , the Yunus regime suffering perennially from fear of the revival of ousted Awami League has intensified its vindictive victimization drive against any individual or group believed to be Awami League supporters or even sympathizers. Sources from Bangladesh said that over the past one year the Yunus regime has filed 1700 cases against Awami League leaders, workers and supporters on cooked up charges including murder. Around 1.5 lakh supporters and workers of Awami League have been framed in false cases and more than 22 thousand have already been arrested and are rotting in jails across the country. Most of the ministers and top leaders of the party were arrested at the very outset even as Sheikh Hasina, the ousted prime minister and main target of attack, had saved her and her sister Rehana’s lives by fleeing to India. But now with the election to the National Assembly slated for February next year approaching fast, the Yunus regime , unnerved by the tide of public opinion against it, has intensified minority persecution and vendetta against Awami League. Sources said that despite being banned as a party the leaders and workers of Awami League may contest the upcoming election individually under different symbols and may also win a number of seats. This will be a major setback for the current dispensation and, hence the intensified persecution and vendetta.
