The 50th death anniversary of Bangladesh’s founder president ‘Bangabandhu’ Sheikh Mujibur Rahaman who had been assassinated with all but two of his family members on the crimson morning of August 15 1975 passed off more or less peacefully in the country today. As directed by the interim government, the police and paramilitary agencies had put up barricades around slain ‘Bangabandhu’s family home in 32 Dhanmondi area of Daka and no follower of now-banned Awami League was allowed inside the house to pay their tributes to the memory of the man who had led the liberation struggle against Pakistan in 1971. Two entire families and a couple who had approached the deserted and vandalised home of ‘Bangabandhu’ were driven away by the security forces and the anti-Awami League political activists in the area even assaulted a woman who had come with her husband to pay her respect to the assassinated founder of the nation, No other untoward incident from other parts of the country has been reported.

Meanwhile, Nahid Islam , a former co-ordinator in the interim government and the incumbent convener of the newly formed National Citizens Party (NCP), has in a social media comment acknowledged ‘Bangabandhu’s role in the liberation struggle but condemned his misrule of the country. He also repudiated the honorific of ‘Father of the Nation’ conferred on him by his party leaders and daughter, exiled Sheikh Hasina. Nahid also described ‘Bangabandhu’s legacy as ‘fascist’ and synonymous with all round anarchy in the country. “His party converted Bangladesh into a colony of India and his successors including his daughter and ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina suppressed the voice of people and trampled upon even the basic human rights of the people of Bangladesh; the country is now being restructured anew and real democracy will be restored in the interest of people” said Nahid Islam.
