In a historic Independence Day announcement, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi unveiled the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rojgar Yojana (PMVBRY), a Rs. 1 lakh crore national employment generation initiative aimed at empowering India’s youth and strengthening private sector growth. The scheme is set to have a transformative impact on small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Tripura and across the North Eastern Region, where job creation and skilled manpower retention have long been key challenges.

Addressing the nation from the Red Fort, the Prime Minister said,

> “My country’s youth, today is 15th August, and on this very day, we are launching a scheme worth Rs 1 lakh crore for the youth of our country. From today, the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rojgar Yojana is being implemented. Under this scheme, young men and women getting their first job in the private sector will receive Rs 15,000 from the government. Companies that create more employment opportunities will also be given incentive amounts. The Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rojgar Yojana will create nearly 3.5 crore new employment opportunities for the youth.”

Why This Scheme Matters for Tripura & the North East?

The North Eastern states, particularly Tripura, have a high concentration of small-scale industries, startup enterprises, and service-sector MSMEs. Many of these businesses face constraints in attracting and retaining skilled youth due to competitive salaries offered in metropolitan areas.

With the Rs 15,000 direct benefit transfer (DBT) to each eligible youth joining their first job, local employers will find it easier to recruit and train fresh talent. The scheme’s incentives for companies generating significant new employment will further encourage MSMEs to expand operations and create sustainable jobs within the region.

Voices from the Ground

Local business leaders in Tripura have welcomed the announcement, noting that the PMVBRY could bridge the gap between skill availability and job opportunities in smaller towns. For industries like food processing, handicrafts, IT-enabled services, and tourism, all significant in Tripura’s economy, the scheme is expected to provide a timely stimulus.

Implementation Mechanism

Under the scheme, companies will register on the official PMVBRY portal and upload details of eligible new hires. Once verified, the government will transfer Rs 15,000 directly to the youth’s bank account. Employers exceeding set job creation thresholds will receive additional incentives, possibly in the form of direct cash benefits, EPFO/ESIC contribution subsidies, or tax rebates.

A Step Towards Inclusive Development

With nearly 3.5 crore new jobs targeted nationwide, the PMVBRY represents one of the largest direct employment-linked benefit programs ever launched in India. For the North East, where economic growth is closely tied to MSME resilience, the scheme could be a game-changer in reversing migration trends and building a stronger local workforce.
