Tripura today joined the rest of the nation in observing Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, marking the tragic events of August 14, 1947, when the Indian subcontinent was divided into two separate nations, India and Pakistan driven by political gains and the lust for power of the then ruling authorities. The partition led to the displacement of millions, the loss of countless lives, and the uprooting of innumerable families from their homes and livelihoods.
To commemorate this day, a solemn event was held at the Rabindra Hall of Maharaja Bir Bikram College in Agartala, attended by Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha, Higher Education Minister Kishore Barman, Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, and other dignitaries. The Chief Minister paid heartfelt tribute to those who lost their lives in the senseless violence and massacres following the partition, and to the indomitable spirit of survivors who, despite unimaginable suffering, found the courage to rebuild their lives and contribute to the making of a new India.
“On this day, I extend my deepest respects to every citizen who suffered under oppression during those dark times,” said Dr. Saha. “Tonight, we stand on the eve of our Independence Day, but August 14 will forever remain etched in history as a day of unbearable pain, when a few reckless decisions tore our motherland into two. It is a day to remember the immense suffering, loss, and catastrophe faced by countless people.”
Recalling the events of 1947, Dr. Saha described August 14 as a “bloody day” not just in Indian history, but in world history shaped by British diplomatic manipulation, the stroke of Cyril John Radcliffe’s pen, and Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s two-nation theory. The Chief Minister emphasized that the damage suffered by millions as a result of the partition remains irreparable.
The observance served as a poignant reminder of the human cost of political decisions and the resilience of those who rose from the ashes to shape a united, stronger India.
