Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma Urges Union Home Minister for Immediate NRC Implementation in Tripura

Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah demanding the urgent implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Tripura, similar to the process followed in Assam. In his detailed 4 page's letter, Debbarma highlighted the increasing threat of illegal immigration from Bangladesh, coupled with issues of organized crime, extremism, and drug smuggling.

He alleged that despite clear directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued on May 19, 2025, to detect, deport, and push back illegal migrants within 30 days, the Tripura government has failed to establish detention camps or form effective Special Task Forces (STFs) across districts. Currently, only one STF exists in West Tripura, but Debbarma described it as “an effort of eye wash” due to the absence of central security forces, civil administration officers, proper guidelines, headquarters, dedicated vehicles, or communication facilities.

The MLA also criticized the state machinery for its reluctance in detecting and deporting illegal migrants, noting that the Mobile Task Force (MTF), originally formed in 1975 to address illegal immigration has become “very weak and almost inoperative.” He warned that illegal migrants are residing in various parts of Tripura, with some allegedly involved in anti-India activities both within and outside the country, thereby posing a serious threat to national security and sovereignty.

Debbarma urged the Centre to involve central police and civil administrative officers in executing the NRC in Tripura, stressing that the process must begin “on a priority basis” to safeguard the state and the nation.
