Library Day Celebrated with Dignity at Birchandra State Central Library

The Birchandra State Central Library yesterday observed Library Day with due honor and grandeur, marking the birth anniversary of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, pioneer of the Library Science movement in India. The celebration was held at the library auditorium, where invited guests were warmly welcomed with floral bouquets and traditional Risa. The program commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp and floral tributes to Dr. Ranganathan’s portrait, followed by presentation of mementos to the guests.MLA and Chairperson of the Tripura Legislative Assembly Library Committee, Mrs. Swapna Debbarma, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In her address, she emphasized the need for authorities to address key challenges in Tripura’s public library services, including staffing shortages and infrastructure issues.

Other distinguished guests included Tripura Lokayukta Shri Bibhas Kanti Kilikdar, noted social worker and retired IPS officer Shri B. K. Roy, eminent speaker Dr. Ashis Kumar Vaidya, Registrar of Tripura Medical Council Shri Bholanath Saha, Assistant Director of TTAADC’s Information and Cultural Affairs Department Shri Bipin Debbarma, and Senior District Magistrate & Collector Shri Uttam Kumar Bhowmik representing the District Magistrate. The event was presided over by Shri Animesh Debbarma, Director of Higher Education, Government of Tripura.Speakers highlighted Dr. Ranganathan’s remarkable contributions to the development of libraries, the importance of libraries in society, and the significant responsibilities carried by librarians.

For the first time, the Birchandra State Central Library felicitated retired librarians and library staff in recognition of their career contributions, as well as distinguished readers who have successfully established themselves in various government departments using the library’s books and internet facilities. In total, 12 librarians, 13 library staff members, and 31 distinguished readers were honored with floral bouquets, traditional scarves, and mementos.

Adding a unique touch, the event also promoted the “One Tree in Mother’s Name” initiative. Saplings of mango and other trees were distributed to all attendees courtesy of the State Forest Department, and several saplings were planted in the library garden premises.

Noted artists Amar Nath Banik, Chiradeep Ganguly, Samiran Das, Sujata Som, Rituja Saha, and Bipin Debbarma were also felicitated, and they enriched the celebration with a captivating cultural program.

Senior Librarian Shri Manoranjan Debbarma anchored the event, while Librarian Abhijit Saha delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all participants for making the Library Day celebration a grand success.
