The announcement of the election to the national assembly in Bangladesh by the interim government has been followed by a war of attrition between the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Yunus sponsored National Citizens Party (NCP) and the fundamentalist Jamat-e-Islami that had engineered the anti-Awami League and Anti-Hasina agitation last year, leading to the fall of the government. But now the NCP and Jamat have unleashed a campaign of calumny against the BNP and its leadership to discredit the party . This has been partially provoked by the recent assertion of the BNP’s secretary general Mirza Faqrul Alamgir who said that Taique Rahaman , son of BNP supremo and former prime minister Begum Zia, will be the country’s next prime minister.
Protesting the canards being spread against the party BNP secretary general Mirza Faqrul Alamgir spoke to the media yesterday to voice his party’s stand against the ill-motivated campaign. Faqrul said that falsehood is being made against BNP's politics.“BNP is being blamed for every bad thing taking place in the country now. These efforts are intentional. As BNP has the potentials and possibilities to run the state in the future, this propaganda is being spread to defame it,” he said.
Fakhrul was addressing a discussion titled “Expectations of the youth and BNP's plan for the future of Bangladesh,” organized by Chhatra Dal, Jubo Dal, and Swechhasebak Dal marking International and National Youth Day at Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center.BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman addressed the program virtually as the chief guest from London. Noting that youths can change everything, the BNP secretary general said the youth have driven out fascists like Sheikh Hasina.
“We have to create a wonderful foundation and take the country forward,” he said.Earlier, the program started at 3:30pm with the recitation of the Holy Quran. Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam Rakib delivered the welcome speech with Swechhasebak Dal President SM Jilani in the chair.
