Politicians cutting across parties and countries , when tenured even briefly, invariably act on the delusion that they are endowed with a divine right to impart knowledge on any subject in the world including international politics and diplomacy. Such instances are easy to come by , specially in India, as we see even no-brainer dynasts in politics gratuitously offer gems and pearls of wisdom on any subject under the sun. The hallowed sanctum sanctorum of Indian parliament is witness to such sprinkling of advices on exalted subjects by pretentious pedestrians, legitimised by public mandate .
What however has just come as a surprise is a piece of advice from the world chess legend, now retired Garry Kasparov, holder of the world chess championship title for long two decades between 1985 and the millennial year 2000. Born in Baku (1963), capital of Azerbaizan, a constituent of the now defunct Soviet Russia, of a Jewish father and Armenian mother, Kasparov left behind his footprint , not only as a chess genius but also as a fighter . He had to work his way up through struggle and blessings of a then Soviet Politburo member from Baku . But for this help he would not have been able even to challenge the then reigning world chess champion Anatoly Karpov. Kasparov , alongside the legendary and late Bobby Fishcher of the USA , is still considered one of the greatest in the game of chess.
But, be that as it may, since retirement he has made forays into the charmed arena of politics in Russian federation where he is settled now , unsuccessfully though. He nurses a deep grouse against the incumbent Russian president Vladimir Putin whom he describes as a dictator and anti-democratic. Kasparov however remains undeterred by his string of failures in politics and this time he has offered an advice to Indian prime minister Narendra Modi by urging upon him to discard Putin as a friend and not to antagonize the USA. “Putin is anti-democratic and a dictator who brooks no rival and who trusts only those who grovel before him; hence it is better for you to avoid Putin and not to antagonize the USA” said Kasparov in a social media comment. However the Modi establishment is yet to react to the sage counsel , completely ignoring the former world chess champion, possibly looking upon him as too inconsequential a man to be given importance to.
