Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman on Sunday said allegations of irregularities and corrupt practices at Tripura University are being closely monitored by the state’s Higher Education Department, with regular updates sent to the Union Ministry of Education.
In an interview with a local cable channel, Barman clarified that while the state government has no direct control over the university’s administrative decisions, it is not remaining passive. “Whatever is possible within our limited jurisdiction is being done. The Union Ministry is being informed about every instance of mismanagement that comes to our notice,” he said.
Barman announced that an all-women’s college will soon be set up in Nalchar, his constituency, as promised by the Chief Minister. He also revealed that Tripura Institute of Technology and Women’s College, Agartala, are on course to be upgraded to university status, with the process expected to be completed shortly.
Addressing recent admission controversies at Ram Thakur College, the minister said there is no shortage of seats in the state. “We have around 33,000 college seats and only 24,000 students cleared Higher Secondary this year. Students may not get their preferred college due to the merit-based system, but everyone will have a place for higher studies. Certain colleges, including Ram Thakur, attract more demand, but rules cannot be bent to satisfy a section of students,” he added.
