A five-month-old baby girl was allegedly killed by her own mother in Rampada Para ADC village under Sonamura subdivision, after the woman reportedly became convinced the child was the result of an illicit relationship.

Family members identified the accused as Suchitrabala Debbarma, who is alleged to have been involved in an affair with the cousin of her father-in-law, Nirmal Debbarma. According to relatives, she believed the infant’s biological father was her paramour, not her husband, Amit Kumar Debbarma.

Although Amit reportedly accepted the child, frequent disputes arose within the family over her paternity. Relatives said Suchitrabala often endured humiliation and taunts from her in-laws, which fuelled tensions. In the early hours of Sunday, she allegedly smothered the baby with a pillow, leading to the child’s death.

Police were alerted soon after the incident. A team from Sonamura police station reached the spot and sent the body to Sonamura hospital. However, the post-mortem examination could not be carried out immediately due to the absence of sufficient medical officers, and has been scheduled for Monday.

The accused has been detained and, according to police sources, confessed to the killing during interrogation.

This is the second incident of its kind in the state within a short span. Just days earlier, a TSR personnel was arrested in Behalabari, Khowai district, for allegedly killing his infant daughter.

The gruesome death has left the local community in shock and mourning.
