Kamalpur police have arrested two young men from Uttar Pradesh who allegedly attempted to secure government jobs under Tripura’s resident quota using fake documents. The arrests, made with prior intelligence from vigilant locals, have once again exposed a recruitment scam that has been ongoing for years involving candidates from outside the state.
The two accused, Rupesh Kumar and Pradeep Kumar, along with a woman identified as Mamata Singh, had reportedly cleared the Staff Selection Commission (SSC GD) exams by falsely claiming to be residents of Morachhara under Kamalpur subdivision in Tripura’s Dhalai district. The police nabbed the two men at Salema while they were on their way to Kamalpur to collect job offer letters sent via the post office. They were later handed over to Kamalpur police.
According to sources, for several years candidates from Delhi, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh have been using forged residential documents to secure jobs under Tripura’s quota. This is because the qualifying marks under Tripura’s quota are significantly lower compared to their home states. A network allegedly involving individuals working in Assam Rifles and the BSF has been facilitating such fraudulent activities.
In this case, the name of a retired Assam Rifles jawan, Umesh Chandra, has surfaced again. He had allegedly arranged for these outsiders to use fake Tripura residential identities for SSC exams. All three accused successfully passed the exam, but when they attempted to arrange address proof through a local Common Service Centre (CSC) in Morachhara, the CSC operator alerted local residents and provided full details, including photographs, to the police.
On August 8, the two men arrived at Ambassa railway station and headed towards Kamalpur. Acting on information, Salema police intercepted them and took them into custody. The incident has sparked outrage among local unemployed youth, who gathered in large numbers outside the police station to protest, alleging that outsiders were snatching away their rightful employment opportunities through fraudulent means.
The arrested individuals will be produced before court tomorrow. The incident has reignited demands for a high-level inquiry into the SSC recruitment scam in Tripura, a demand that has been raised by concerned citizens in the past as well.
