In a bold and community-driven initiative, the residents of Amtali Bypass area in Agartala have taken matters into their own hands to combat drug abuse in the locality. Acting under the guidance and supervision of Surjamaninagar MLA Ramprasad Pal, local citizens, along with members of the BJP Yuva Morcha, have launched a sustained anti-drug campaign in the area.
Unlike typical police operations, this initiative is being carried out daily by the community members themselves. MLA Ramprasad Pal has reportedly expressed a strong desire to eradicate the drug menace from the region, encouraging local youth to actively participate in these campaigns.
Yesterday, during an anti-drug drive conducted in the Amtali Bypass locality, at least ten individuals who had reportedly come to the area with the intent to consume drugs—using bikes, scooters, and other vehicles were detained by the campaigners and handed over to the police.
Ironically, despite the presence of police checkpoints in the area, there had been little proactive effort from the police to intercept or arrest drug abusers. The community's actions have highlighted this inaction, showcasing how common citizens are stepping in where enforcement agencies have hesitated.
Similar operations were carried out yesterday as well, during which several drug peddlers and addicts were detained and turned over to the authorities. According to locals, every evening sees a surge in the number of drug users gathering at the Amtali Bypass from different parts of the city, turning the area into a hotspot for substance abuse.
The local-led crackdown has not only brought attention to the growing drug problem but has also questioned the effectiveness and commitment of law enforcement in tackling the issue. Many in the area are now urging for stronger cooperation between the police and community to ensure long-term success in curbing drug abuse.
