Ansar Uddin, a Muslim man, was detained at Agartala Railway Station on Thursday while allegedly attempting to abduct a 16-year-old Hindu girl. The detention was made by activists from the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, who then handed him over to the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Agartala. He was subsequently transferred to the East Agartala Women's Police Station.
The mother of the alleged victim, Sujala Sarkar, has filed an FIR stating that Ansar Uddin repeatedly raped her minor daughter and threatened her with severe consequences if she revealed the assaults.
According to the FIR, the victim left her home for tuition classes around 2 PM on Wednesday. The FIR alleges, "The accused, a resident of Indranagar, Agartala, abducted her. He forced himself upon her and also threatened her with dire consequences if she dared to disclose anything about the atrocities she had endured. Later, he planned to traffic her elsewhere out of Tripura. On their way out from Agartala, they were detained at Agartala Railway Station."
Ansar Uddin has been arrested and produced before the court.
Activists from the Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal assisted the victim's family in filing the FIR.
Sources close to the matter have also indicated that the minor girl and the accused were allegedly involved in a love affair. Regardless, any such act involving a minor is punishable under the law.
