A violent clash erupted late Wednesday night at Hiracherra ADC village under Gournagar RD Block in Kailashahar, leaving at least seven people injured following a dispute over dog slaughter for meat consumption.
Local sources said that tension had been simmering in the area after allegations surfaced against three villagers for slaughtering dogs and selling pet dogs. One of the accused, Pintu Das, had reportedly been absconding since the complaints were first lodged.
Violence broke out when, as alleged, relatives of Pintu Das attacked the residence of Rajaram Nuniya Munda, who had filed the initial complaint. In the scuffle, Rajaram’s wife Surji Gaur, Golap Chasha, Budhan Chasha, and Sultan Ali sustained injuries. Eyewitnesses claimed sharp weapons were used in the attack, leaving some of the victims severely wounded and bleeding. They were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, relatives of Pintu Das filed a counter-complaint, alleging that Rajaram and his supporters had attacked the home of Chandan Das. In this incident, Chandan Das and Sama Bauri were reportedly injured.
A police team led by SDPO Jayanta Karmakar reached the scene and brought the situation under control. Security has been tightened and an investigation is underway.
