The frantically sought after miscreant who had triggered a storm of trouble in Bisramganj , fuelling further division between tribals and non-tribals has at last been tracked down and arrested by police in Bishalgarh. It was on the night of August 5 that the miscreant identified as Sukumar Banik had been moving towards Bisramganj from Agartala by bus and found a young tribal girl by his side on the seat . He started molesting the girl , a trainee air-hostess returning home on holiday from Guwahati. Reacting sharply the girl resisted the obscene advances of Sukumar Banik and informed her relatives in Bisramganj but, having realized what might happen to him the miscreant Sukumar Banik got down from the bus ahead of Bisramganj and disappeared.
By the time the bus reached Bisramganj , a large tribal mob including relatives of the girl had gathered and first vandalised the bus and then mindlessly attacked the shops in the market manifesting their traditional and thoughtless ethnic hatred. The mob comprised mostly the miscreants of ‘Tipra Motha’ and it was with great difficulty that the police managed to restore order.
The chief minister Dr Manik Saha took a strong view of the issue and directed police to arrest the culprit by any means . Having launched a massive man-hunt on the basis of information collected from reliable sources, a team of Bishalgarh police station identified the culprit as Sukumar Banik of Chandra Nagar area and arrested him from his home late last night. The womens police station of Bishalgarh that had played a key role in nabbing the culprit Sukumar Banik produced him in court today and secured three days of police remand for interrogation.
