Serious Questions Raised Over Alleged Tenure Extension and Nepotism in Tripura University Administration

A notification issued by the Registrar of Tripura University, dated August 7, 2025, has triggered serious concerns among faculty members and academic observers. The notice calls for a meeting of all regular faculty members with the Vice Chancellor Prof. Ganga Prasad Prasain on August 26, 2025, ten days after the Vice Chancellor’s scheduled end of tenure on August 16, 2025.
This unexpected development has led to growing speculation that the current Vice Chancellor may continue in office beyond his approved term, despite no official announcement of an extension by the Ministry of Education or the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The letter, signed by Registrar Dr. Deepak Sharma, states that the meeting has been approved by the "Competent Authority", yet it does not clarify under what capacity Prof. Prasain will preside over the meeting after the expiration of his tenure.
Observers have expressed deep concern over this implied extension, especially given that Prof. Prasain has faced multiple allegations in the past related to administrative irregularities, favoritism, and violations of university norms. Critics are questioning how a Vice Chancellor with such a cloud of controversy could continue beyond his legal term without transparent procedure or explanation.
Further intensifying the controversy is the alleged appointment of Prof. Prasain’s son, Lalit Prasain, as Assistant Engineer at Tripura University. Reports suggest that Lalit Prasain was granted extraordinary leave without completing the mandatory provisional service period, raising serious questions about nepotism and the misuse of administrative power.
"This situation is not just unethical, it may be illegal," said a senior faculty member who did not wish to be named. "We urge the UGC and the Ministry of Education to step in immediately and clarify whether Prof. Ganga Prasad Prasain has received any official extension. If not, this notification is a direct violation of the norms governing central universities."
Many believe that allowing Prof. Prasain to continue despite such allegations and procedural ambiguities will undermine the credibility of Tripura University and demoralize honest educators and staff.
Faculty members, students, and civil society representatives have jointly demanded:
Immediate clarification on the status of the Vice Chancellor’s tenure. And a high-level inquiry into the alleged irregular appointment of his son.
As the issue unfolds, the academic community awaits a formal response from the authorities. Until then, questions surrounding governance, ethics, and nepotism at Tripura University remain unanswered.
