A tragic road accident at Chakmaghat in Teliamura has led to serious allegations of administrative failure, sparking public outrage and a road blockade on the Assam-Agartala National Highway.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday when a cement-laden lorry, traveling from Dharmanagar to Agartala, lost control and overturned near Chakmaghat. The driver and owner of the vehicle, Mihirlal Debnath from Dasda in Kanchanpur, was trapped inside the severely damaged cabin. Despite repeatedly pleading for help, Mihirlal remained stuck for nearly six to seven agonizing hours, ultimately succumbing to his injuries.
According to eyewitnesses, neither the Police, Civil administration team nor the fire services could rescue him in time. Although a few disaster response personnel with inadequate equipment arrived at the scene, their tools reportedly failed to function. Only after nearly seven hours did a senior official from the DCM (Disaster Control Mechanism) reach the spot. SDM Teliamura Parimal Majumder not even informed the incident to his DM or SP in time.
The delay in response and lack of effective rescue efforts enraged the local community and fellow drivers. On Wednesday, the All Driver Welfare Association organized a highway blockade at Chakmaghat, demanding a thorough investigation into Mihirlal Debnath’s death and holding those responsible for the failure accountable.
The protest continued for around two hours, causing disruption on the crucial Assam-Agartala National Highway, and was lifted only after administrative officials assured the protesters of appropriate action and an investigation.
