The high court of West Bengal had ruled many years ago that the sound emitted by sound system in public programmes can not go beyond 65 decibel . Since then the order has been upheld by many other high courts but this has had hardly any impact in Tripura. Despite the government announcement ritually by the state government the blaring noise of sound system in public has been continuing gleefully even though last year the police had acted upon a government to seize and curb sound systems during ‘Durga Puja’. The then officer in charge of NCC police station Sushanta Deb had been closed only because he had seized a blaring sound system during a ‘Kali Puja’ and since then police have become apathetic towards unbearable noises being created by sound system including the notorious ‘DJ’.

The evil effect of police inaction in the matter resulted in a clash in Baldakhal area of old Agartala under the East Agartala police station between the women organizers of a ‘Bipad Nashini Puja’ and neighbours. Sources from Chandrapur Baldakhal area said that a group of 27 women had organised the ‘Bipad Nashini Puja’ in the residence of Rashmi Ghosh. When the sound system hired for the ‘Puja’ was in full flow in the house a neighbouring youth Sayan Datta had barged into the house and abusively protested the loud noise created by the sound system. The organizers including Rashmi Ghosh moved the mouth of the system in a different direction but this did not satisfy the protestors and within half an hour a band of attackers Sayan Datta, Pritam Datta, Purnima Deb and Suman Deb stormed Rashmi Ghosh’s house and injured three members of the family of Mantu Das present in the house . The attackers had come armed with clubs and spears for mounting the attack.

Yesterday in the morning Rashmi Ghosh and others present at the time of the attack in her house filed a complaint with the East Agartala womens police station. The police however have not yet arrested any person complained against . Sources from Baldakhal area said that there is a strong demand from among people that the widespread use of sound system beyond the court-mandated limits should be curbed drastically by the government and police.
