Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury strongly criticised the Delhi Police for referring to a Bengali accent as "Bangladeshi language" in a recent letter. He argued that an individual's accent cannot be used to determine nationality and called the remark an insult to the Bengali language.

Chaudhury pointed out that both India’s national anthem and national song are composed in Bengali, a language recognised under the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution and spoken by millions across India. Labelling it as "Bangladeshi" undermines its national significance and disrespects constitutional values, he said.

He further alleged that such instances reflect a growing bias against non-Hindi languages in Hindi-speaking states, driven by the ideological narrative of "Hindu, Hindi, Hindustan" promoted by the RSS and BJP. According to him, this trend promotes linguistic discrimination and Hindi imposition across the country.

Citing Tripura as an example, he warned that people from the state, who speak in Bengali with accents similar to that of neighbouring Bangladesh due to geographical and cultural proximity, could become targets of unfair profiling.

Chaudhury also noted that people from the North East frequently face discrimination based on appearance and language, stressing that such practices threaten the pluralistic fabric of the nation.
