With barely two months left, the festive spirit is beginning to take over Tripura as the countdown to Durga Puja officially begins. In Agartala, where lakhs of pandal hoppers gather each year, preparations are already in full swing. Community clubs across the city have started Khuti Puja — the traditional ritual that marks the beginning of pandal construction — and have also begun revealing their unique themes.
One of the early announcements came from Aikatan Juba Sanstha of Shantipara. This year, they have chosen a Buddhist temple in Myanmar as the inspiration for their marquee design, aiming to draw attention with intricate artistry and cultural symbolism.
Another major club, Tushaar Sangha of Chandrapur, has opted for a socially conscious theme. Concerned about increasing mobile phone addiction among children, the club plans to use their Puja to raise awareness about the adverse effects of excessive screen time. A club member said, “We have been organising Puja for 60 years. Today’s children are growing up with gadgets, missing out on a vibrant childhood. Through this theme, we hope to send a message to parents.”
Alongside Durga Puja preparations, the state is also gearing up for Ganesh Chaturthi, with the festival season officially kicking off with Manasa Puja later this month and concluding with Deepavali in October.
According to estimates by Agartala Municipal Corporation, over 20 lakh people visit pandals across the city during the four-day Durga Puja festivities, especially on Chaturthi and Panchami evenings, before traffic restrictions take effect.
