Tipra Motha founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarman on Monday announced that he will approach the Supreme Court seeking early village council elections in the areas under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

Speaking to the media after attending a court proceeding in Agartala related to a defamation case he had filed against YouTuber Saikat Talapatra, Debbarman during the interaction with the media stated that the delay in holding village council elections is a violation of democratic rights in tribal areas.

"Village council elections are long overdue. It is the grassroots of democracy in tribal regions. I will file a case in the Supreme Court demanding early polls for the benefit of the indigenous people," Debbarman told reporters outside the West Tripura District and Sessions Court.

The case against Saikat Talapatra, who was produced before the court today, pertains to alleged defamatory content broadcast against Debbarman.

Meanwhile, commenting on the recent tensions and sporadic clashes reported between Tipra Motha and BJP supporters in different parts of the state, Debbarman urged for restraint and called for a peaceful political environment.

“Attempts are being made to provoke our supporters. But we believe in constitutional methods. I will take the legal route to ensure village council elections are held without delay,” he added.

The village council elections in the ADC areas, which play a crucial role in rural administration in the hills of Tripura, have been pending despite the end of their tenure, raising concerns among various tribal organizations and political groups.

With Debbarman’s decision to knock the doors of the Supreme Court, the issue is likely to gain national attention in the coming days. The Tripura High Court has already been ordered for the early village Council election once last year.
