Tension gripped the emergency ward of GB Pant Hospital after two on-duty doctors were allegedly assaulted by the family of a patient admitted in the early hours of Sunday.

The patient, Bimal Sarkar, was brought to the hospital around 3 am after reportedly consuming poison mixed with alcohol. He was immediately shifted to the emergency unit where Dr Litan Das attended to him. However, trouble began when the patient’s sons, Tapan and Papan Sarkar, allegedly became aggressive, leading to a heated exchange with Dr Das. The situation quickly escalated, and Dr Das was verbally abused and physically manhandled.

When Dr Avik Deb tried to intervene, he too was reportedly assaulted. Dr Santanu Das was also present on duty.

Strongly condemning the incident, Dr Sishendu Dhar, in charge of the emergency unit, expressed frustration over the inadequate response from the on-duty police and private security staff. “Despite repeated appeals, no FIR was registered even 12 hours after the incident,” he said, highlighting ongoing concerns over doctor safety and the lack of effective security measures at the state’s premier hospital.
