Bangladesh High Commissioner to India, M. Riaz Hamidullah, wrapped up his three-day visit to Tripura on Sunday and departed for New Delhi in the afternoon. Before leaving, he met Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu at Raj Bhavan, accompanied by Arif Muhammad, Assistant High Commissioner in Agartala.
Arriving on Friday, the envoy first called on Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha. His visit focused on reviewing key India-Bangladesh connectivity projects awaiting inauguration, including the Agartala-Akhaura railway link, Sabroom Integrated Check Post, Maitri Setu over the Feni River, and the ongoing inland waterway project. These initiatives, backed by Indian investment, aim to transform Tripura into a vital trade hub for the Northeast.
The projects, earlier expected to open in December 2024, remain delayed due to political unrest in Bangladesh following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s reported exit from the country.
Though he avoided detailed media interactions, Hamidullah expressed satisfaction with the progress. His visit is seen as a positive diplomatic signal amid recent tensions over minority safety in Bangladesh. He departed Agartala’s MBB Airport on a 3 pm flight to New Delhi.
