A major protest broke out yesterday at No.2 Jalefa Higher Secondary School in Sabroom, South Tripura, as students and members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) locked the school gates demanding immediate redressal of several critical issues, including shortage of teachers and the absence of a headmaster.
The demonstration began around 1 PM when students assembled inside the school premises and hung a lock on the main entrance gate, effectively halting all academic activities. Protesters claimed that there are no adequate subject teachers to conduct regular classes in multiple subjects, severely affecting the academic future of the students.
Additionally, the school has reportedly been functioning without a principal for an extended period. The lack of a boundary wall has also raised safety concerns, making the school vulnerable to trespassing and other risks. Students stated that these issues have been repeatedly brought to the attention of the education department officials, but no concrete action has been taken so far.
In solidarity with the students, ABVP activists actively participated in the protest, voicing strong criticism against the education department's negligence. Protesters warned that if their demands are not met soon, the agitation will intensify in the coming days.
The incident has drawn attention to the deteriorating condition of basic infrastructure and faculty availability in rural educational institutions across Tripura.
