In a significant step towards strengthening the skill development and employability landscape of Tripura, a one-day high-level stakeholder consultation was successfully held today in Agartala. The workshop, titled “Revamping the Skill Development and Employability Ecosystem in Tripura”, was jointly organized by the Tripura Institution for Transformation (TIFT) and the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIMC).
The event marked a milestone in the state's efforts to create a dynamic and inclusive Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system. It is the first time that a comprehensive multi-agency consultative process of this scale has been initiated in Tripura to formulate a major policy intervention.
The consultation was graced by Sri Paramananda Sarkar Bannerjee, Officer on Special Duty to the Chief Minister of Tripura, who delivered the keynote address. He emphasized the critical need to align skilling strategies with emerging economic opportunities and the state's evolving demographic profile.
Senior government officials, including the Director of Skill Development, attended the event along with representatives from academia, civil society, industry, and training institutions.
The IIM Calcutta team, led by Prof. Saikat Maitra and Prof. Rajeshbabu R, facilitated intensive sectoral discussions. Their ongoing study identified logistics, IT/ITES, eco-tourism, agro-processing, pharmaceuticals, and crafts as high-potential sectors for skilling and employment generation in Tripura.
Key sessions during the workshop included panel discussions on sectoral alignment in hospitality, healthcare, bamboo, and rubber-wood industries. Breakout groups also addressed gender-inclusive and tribal youth skilling, green jobs, entrepreneurship, and digital skilling, highlighting strategic pathways for the state’s future skilling roadmap.
Insights and recommendations emerging from this workshop will contribute to the final policy report and operational toolkit being developed by IIM Calcutta and TIFT. This toolkit will guide policy alignment, stakeholder coordination, and implementation reforms to boost employability in the state.
The Government of Tripura reaffirmed its commitment to developing a future-ready skilling ecosystem that empowers the youth, promotes inclusive growth, and strengthens the socio-economic fabric of the state.
