Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Wednesday raised a serious concern regarding the presence of unscrupulous middlemen outside state hospitals who allegedly misguide patients and divert them to hospitals outside Tripura in exchange for commissions.
Speaking at the 21st Foundation Day celebration of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital, Dr. Saha warned that these touts, sitting right in front of GB, TMC, and other hospitals across the state, often lure unsuspecting patients and their families into seeking treatment outside the state—even when free and quality treatment is available in Tripura itself.
“These middlemen not only deceive patients but also harm the reputation and utility of our own healthcare institutions. Even cases that can be treated free of cost here are being referred outside for vested interests. I have directed officials to keep a close watch on such activities,” said the Chief Minister, addressing the gathering at the Karl Landsteiner Auditorium of AGMC.
Dr. Saha asserted that Tripura now has robust infrastructure and expert facilities for the treatment of all major ailments, including cancer. “There is no need to go outside the state for proper medical care. We have ensured quality services in our hospitals,” he emphasized.
Praising the contributions of AGMC and GBP Hospital, the Chief Minister said the institution has become a model for both medical education and quality healthcare delivery in Tripura. “AGMC and GBP are setting examples not only in the academic field but also in public service through committed healthcare,” he added.
On this occasion, Dr. Saha conveyed his heartfelt greetings to all faculty members and students of the college. He also felicitated the toppers of undergraduate and postgraduate courses from various departments during the ceremony.
