Potholes Emerge Within 5 Years of Construction on Sabroom-Agartala National Highway; Locals Forced to Take Repairs Into Their Own Hands

Within just five years of construction, the Sabroom-Agartala National Highway has deteriorated to such an extent that large potholes have formed along various stretches, severely affecting the movement of vehicles and putting commuters at risk. In the absence of any action from the contractor or concerned national highway authorities, local youth have stepped up and begun filling the potholes using cement and stones collected on their own initiative.

According to local sources, the quality of construction of this national highway was so poor that the road surface has not been able to withstand regular traffic and weather conditions even for half a decade. Cracks and holes have appeared across major portions of the route, raising serious questions about the standard of materials and workmanship used during the construction phase.Residents have further alleged that several basic infrastructure components, which are supposed to be part of a national highway, are entirely missing. There are no functional streetlights for night-time visibility, no proper drainage system to prevent waterlogging, and no traffic signals to regulate movement at junctions. Moreover, regular maintenance and repair work, which is crucial for the upkeep of any highway, have been neglected entirely.

This situation has not only caused inconvenience to daily commuters but also poses serious safety risks. Locals are demanding immediate government intervention, strict accountability for the poor-quality construction, and a long-term plan to ensure the highway is restored to a safe and functional condition.
