In a landmark decision aimed at acknowledging the traditional leadership and cultural role within tribal communities, the State Cabinet has approved a substantial hike in the monthly honorarium for tribal community leaders, known as Samajpatis. The honorarium has been increased from the existing Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 5,000 per month.

This decision was taken in recognition of the Samajpatis’ crucial and enduring contributions to maintaining social harmony, preserving customs, and resolving local disputes within their communities. The government acknowledged their service as a vital part of the social fabric, particularly in remote and tribal-dominated areas.

In a further progressive step, the Cabinet has also amended existing guidelines to extend this benefit to Samajpatis who are currently employed in government service or are retired government pensioners. This inclusive provision ensures that those holding or having held government posts will not be excluded from receiving the honorarium, acknowledging that their service to the community is distinct from their formal employment.

A senior official stated that this move is a reflection of the government’s respect and gratitude toward the Samajpatis, whose roles often go unrecognized despite being pivotal in the social structure of tribal societies.

The enhanced honorarium and inclusive eligibility are expected to come into effect soon, following necessary administrative procedures.

This decision marks a notable step toward empowering tribal leadership and reinforcing the state’s commitment to the socio-cultural development of indigenous communities.
