Recruitment of 401 Assistant Professors under process: Tripura CM

Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Friday said that the shortage of teachers in colleges is being addressed as per the standard process, and soon recruitment in 401 posts will be conducted in phases. “We have already requested the Tripura Public Service Commission to conduct exams for the 201 posts of Assistant Professors. Apart from that, a proposal for filling up 200 more posts of assistant professors had already received cabinet’s approval. As per the latest information, the concurrence of the finance is also received. So, the process will start soon,” Dr Saha told the state assembly. He was responding to a query raised by MLA Ashoke Chandra Mitra. The Chief Minister also informed that more than 72,000 students are studying in the 31 general degree colleges of the state. “The total number of students studying in the general degree colleges stands at 72,009. The number of PGTs, Associate Professors, and Assistant Professors teaching in those colleges stands at 787. As per the UGC guideline, we need one professor per 60 students. To bridge the gap, 710 guest faculty have been assigned to render their services. Based on the statistics, we are supposed to have 1,230 professors in the general degree colleges,” the Chief Minister explained. According to MLA Ashoke Chandra Mitra, teacher shortage in government degree colleges is adversely affecting the studies of students. He appealed to the Higher Education Department to expedite the recruitment process of college teachers. “There is no dearth of qualified candidates in our state. A lot of aspirants who have qualified NET, SLET, and also did their PhD. They will also get jobs if the recruitment is conducted,” the MLA pointed out. Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy also raised the issue of the New Education Policy and stated that the teacher-student ratio as per the NEP had been revised. On a related note, Karamcherra MLA Paul Dhangshu and Tipra Motha MLA Pathan Lal Jamatia raised demands to rename the general degree colleges of Longtharai Valley and Kanchanpur after late Shyamacharan Tripura and Late Drau Kumar Reang Both the MLAs said that both politicians had served their community and made great contributions to the state.
