Tension in Champahour: TIPRA Motha Workers Gherao Police Station Demanding Release of Arrested Members Linked to Asaram Bari Clash

Tension gripped the Champahour area of Khowai district on Tuesday as hundreds of TIPRA Motha supporters surrounded the local police station in protest. The demonstration came in response to the arrest of three Motha workers allegedly involved in an attack on BJP workers during the broadcast of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 'Mann Ki Baat' programme at Asaram Bari.

According to police sources, the incident at Asaram Bari involved a violent clash, during which BJP supporters were reportedly attacked. Following an investigation, law enforcement arrested three individuals believed to be TIPRA Motha workers in connection with the incident. The arrests have since sparked political unrest in the area.

In protest, TIPRA Motha supporters launched a "Thana Gherao" (police station blockade) at Champahour, demanding the immediate release of their party members. Protesters accused the police of acting on political bias and claimed the arrests were unjust. The situation escalated when protesters clashed physically with the police outside the police station gate. Authorities quickly shut the main entrance, confining the protesters outside the premises.

Chanting slogans and waving party flags, the protesters vowed to intensify their agitation if the arrested individuals were not released. The protestors also issued a stern warning to the BJP, their ruling ally in the state, indicating rising tensions between the two parties.Sources said,Police maintained a strong presence to prevent escalation.

TIPRA Motha workers accused the BJP of targeting their supporters politically.Local leaders called for unity and restraint, but also warned of larger agitations if demands are ignored.The incident underscores growing friction between coalition partners TIPRA Motha and the BJP in Tripura. The slogan “Which direction is Motha heading?” is gaining momentum among political observers as intra-alliance conflicts continue to surface.As of Tuesday evening, the arrested individuals remain in custody. No injuries have been reported so far, but the situation remains volatile. The police Authorities are monitoring the area closely to prevent further escalation.
