A heartbreaking incident has shaken the town of Belonia in South Tripura, as 16-year-old Trisha Majumder, a brilliant student of Sonapur Class XII School, has tragically passed away today morning after allegedly attempting suicide. Trisha breathed her last at GBP Hospital in Agartala following a desperate battle for life, leaving her family and community in deep sorrow and outrage.

Trisha, the daughter of Samar Majumder, a poor daily-wage labourer from Sonapur in the Barpathari area, was known for her extraordinary academic performance. She consistently ranked first in her class and was admired by peers for her dedication and excellence in studies. However, her rising success allegedly drew resentment from certain teachers at her school.

The incident that led to her death reportedly occurred during the evaluation of a recent Biology class test. Trisha had secured 13 out of 14 marks but questioned why one mark had been deducted, as her final answer though written with a different pen was correct. When she approached her teacher, Bina Das Patari, to clarify the marking, the situation escalated unexpectedly. According to eyewitnesses and her family, the teacher allegedly accused Trisha of cheating and publicly humiliated her in front of classmates, using demeaning language.

Emotionally devastated by the humiliation, Trisha consumed poison after returning home. Her family rushed her to the Barpathari Primary Health Centre. Given her deteriorating condition, she was referred first to Santirbazar District Hospital and later to GBP Hospital in Agartala, where she remained in critical care for two days before succumbing.

Trisha’s grieving family attempted to lodge an FIR against the teacher at Santirbazar Police Station. Shockingly, Sub-Inspector Ratan Debnath reportedly refused to file the complaint, claiming the incident must be reported in the jurisdiction where it occurred. The refusal has triggered widespread condemnation, with legal experts pointing out that complaints can be registered at any police station under present laws.

The incident has sparked outrage in the Barpathari area and across South Tripura. Local residents, student Organizations, and rights groups are demanding a high-level inquiry into the teacher’s conduct and the alleged police negligence. Many are also raising questions about the lack of mental health support in schools and the harsh treatment of students from underprivileged backgrounds.

The family, already struggling under financial constraints, has appealed to the state government for justice and compensation. They also called for reforms in the school system to protect students from such traumatic experiences in the future.

Trisha’s death is not just a personal tragedy, it is a reflection of the urgent need for accountability and compassion in Tripura’s education system.

Locals demand immediate suspension and investigation of teacher Bina Das Patari. And Probe into police officer Ratan Debnath’s refusal to register FIR.
