A shocking incident has come to light from South Tripura's Belonia subdivision, where a brilliant Class X student allegedly attempted suicide after being publicly humiliated by a teacher. The girl, Trisha Majumder, is currently battling for her life at GBP Hospital in Agartala.
According to reports, Trisha Majumder, daughter of daily-wage labourer Samar Majumder, hails from Sonapur area of Barpathari and is a Class X student at Barpathari Sonapur School. Known for her academic excellence, Trisha ranks first in her class. However, some teachers at the school were reportedly displeased with her success, allegedly due to her humble background.
The incident escalated after a recent test in Biology, where Trisha scored 13 out of 14. She had written the last answer using a different pen, although the answer was correct. When she approached her teacher, Bina Das Patari, regarding the deduction of one mark, the teacher allegedly accused her of cheating in front of other students and hurled insulting remarks.
Deeply hurt and humiliated by this public reprimand, Trisha consumed poison upon returning home in an attempt to end her life. She was initially rushed to Barpathari Primary Health Centre by her family. Due to her critical condition, she was referred to the district hospital in Santirbazar. After a day of treatment there, she was again referred to GBP Hospital in Agartala for advanced care.
Trisha’s family attempted to file a police complaint against the teacher at Santirbazar Police Station. However, the officer on duty, SI Ratan Debnath, reportedly refused to register the case, stating that it must be filed in the jurisdiction where the incident took place. This response has triggered outrage among her relatives, who point out that under current legal provisions, a case can be filed from any police station.
The family is not only devastated but also worried about continuing her treatment due to their extreme financial hardship. They have appealed to the state government for a proper investigation and strict action against the teacher responsible for their daughter’s trauma.
The case has sparked concern and demands for justice in the Barapathari area, with locals urging the administration to intervene and ensure accountability in the education system.
