Two Bangladeshi nationals were shot dead and another injured during a smuggling attempt at the Amzadnagar border in Tripura’s Belonia subdivision late Thursday night. The incident has triggered tension along the international border with Bangladesh’s Feni district.

According to BSF officials, around 10 to 15 Bangladeshi smugglers, aided by Indian associates, infiltrated about 150 metres into Indian territory using wooden planks to cross the fencing. Despite heavy rain, BSF personnel intercepted them. When challenged, the intruders pelted stones and advanced aggressively, prompting a trooper to open fire in self-defence.

One smuggler died on the spot. Two others were injured and taken back into Bangladeshi territory by their associates. One of them, Md. Millat Hossain, succumbed to his injuries while being shifted to Chittagong. The deceased found on Indian soil was identified as Md. Liton Miah of Bashpaduya in Feni’s Parshuram municipality. The injured survivor, Md. Afsar Miah, is under treatment in Bangladesh.

BSF recovered two bundles of Viagra tablets from the scene, valued at approximately Rs 15 lakh.
